The active ingredients citric acid, copper and zinc, are present in almost every cell of the human body, in particular the skin, muscle and the brain. Citric acid is produced in every cell as an intermediate of the citric acid (Krebs) cycle. Copper and zinc are essential minerals that must be included as part of our daily nutrition, as they are critical for maintaining human health through a wide variety of biological processes, e.g., DNA synthesis, energy production and immune system function. Humans also possess appropriate mechanisms which can bind and eliminate excess copper and zinc.

Compared to humans, single-celled organisms such as bacteria and viruses, possess different physiological structures and metabolic processes. As a result they cannot process copper and zinc, and are easily killed by small amounts of these compounds.

Therefore, copper and zinc are very toxic to bacteria and viruses yet safe and critical for human health.
